Quantas vezes ter&amp;#225; a Terra sido atingida, no passado, por detritos espaciais e qual ser&amp;#225; a possibilidade de voltarmos a ser atingidos, de novo, no futuro? Qual o tipo de objetos que nos podem atingir, e qual ser&amp;#225; o seu efeito sobre a vida na Terra?

Para responder a estas quest&amp;#245;es, precisamos estudar as crateras de impacto conhecidas na Terra,  usar simula&amp;#231;&amp;#245;es para reproduzir estes impactos e investigar o tipo de objetos de impacto que produzem estas crateras.

N&amp;#227;o &amp;#233; exequ&amp;#237;vel viajar at&amp;#233; aos locais das crateras de impacto, mas existem muitas ferramentas dispon&amp;#237;veis que permitem aos alunos estud&amp;#225;-las dentro da sala de aula. Analisando imagens de sat&amp;#233;lite de crateras de impacto existentes na Terra, os alunos podem investigar o seu tamanho e  fazer compara&amp;#231;&amp;#245;es  com dist&amp;#226;ncias locais at&amp;#233; &amp;#224;  escola ou at&amp;#233; casa. Usando um simulador de impactos que se encontra online, desenvolvido por cientistas que fazem pesquisa nesta &amp;#225;rea,  podem alterar o tamanho, a velocidade, e a densidade do objeto de impacto, em simult&amp;#226;neo com o &amp;#226;ngulo de impacto e outros par&amp;#226;metros importantes, tentando reproduzir as crateras de impacto que  observaram nas imagens.
