A luz &amp;#233; emitida por uma fonte de fundo (estrela ou gal&amp;#225;xia) e recebida na Terra. Na aus&amp;#234;ncia de desvio, apenas um raio luminoso &amp;#233; recebido na Terra ao longo da dire&amp;#231;&amp;#227;o &amp;#224; fonte. Se uma massa (a lente) for colocada entre a Terra e a fonte, diz a Teoria da Relatividade Geral que os raios luminosos s&amp;#227;o desviados para a Terra. Se a fonte, a lente e o observador estiverem perfeitamente alinhados, ser&amp;#225; observado um c&amp;#237;rculo luminoso. Se existir um ligeiro desalinhamento, o resultado ser&amp;#225; o aparecimento de m&amp;#250;ltiplas imagens, e uma luminosidade refor&amp;#231;ada de acordo com a massa da lente.
